Violence ripped through Chicago's evening on Saturday, resulting in multiple shootings and leaving one person dead and several others injured. Two separate incidents within a matter of minutes in Austin and South Chicago marked the beginning of a night marred by gunfire.
In Austin, shots rang out at around 8:15 p.m. in the 1000 block of North Lawler Avenue, according to Chicago Sun-Times. Two men, aged 48 and 52, were in a yard when an unidentified shooter opened fire. Tragically, the 48-year-old man succumbed to a gunshot wound to the chest after being rushed to Stroger Hospital in critical condition. The other victim sustained a gunshot wound to the leg and was reported in good condition at the same hospital. As of now, no arrests have been made as the investigation continues.
Earlier, the South Chicago neighborhood was also disrupted by violence. At 7:33 p.m., a man, 32, and a woman, 44, sitting in a vehicle in the 8500 block of South Manistee Avenue were shot by an undetermined assailant. The man struck in the back, was taken to the University of Chicago Hospital in critical condition; the woman, hit in the left flank and back, was in fair condition according to WGN-TV. With no arrests yet and detectives deeply engaged, the community is left to struggle with the aftershock.
These incidents were just part of a harrowing sequence of events. Policemen were called to multiple other locations across the city, including Roseland and Auburn Gresham, where individuals were shot seemingly indiscriminately. Following the sound of gunfire detected by technology, officers found a 44-year-old man with two gunshot wounds in Back of the Yards. A person of interest is currently in custody related to this shooting. Elsewhere, police activity was noted on East 87th Street and South Jeffrey Boulevard, where two individuals were treated for gunshot wounds after allegedly being chased down.
