Residents of the 9th District (Deering) are on alert after a series of motor vehicle thefts that have taken place throughout September, as detailed in a recent community notice from the Chicago Police Department. Vehicles were reported missing by owners who had parked them only to find them gone upon their return.

The thefts occurred at various times and locations, with incidents reported on the 2400 Block of S. Normal Avenue between September 2nd and 4th, the 2000 block of S. Wentworth Avenue and 500 block of W. 24th Place on September 3rd, and the 2200 Block of S. Archer Avenue between September 5th and 6th. Offenders, whose identities remain unknown, have taken advantage of unattended vehicles within specific time frames, varying from early afternoon til the dead of night.

In response to the uptick in thefts, Chicago Police have issued advisories encouraging citizens to adopt safety measures to protect their vehicles. Recommended actions include keeping vehicles locked, not leaving keys in the car, and being vigilant for suspicious behavior in parking areas. Community members are urged to immediately report any unusual activity or loitering to authorities by calling 911 and providing detailed descriptions of the perpetrators and any vehicles involved.

Additional preventative measures have been provided by the department for car owners. "Kia and Hyundai owners can obtain anti-theft steering wheel locks from their local CAPS office," notes the alert, and city residents have access to a program for etching traceable markings onto their catalytic converters. Furthermore, a reimbursement program is in place for individuals who register for a GPS tracking device, reinforcing the effort to deter criminals and aid in the recovery of stolen property.
