A tragic incident has rattled a South Side Chicago community this Thursday after a 43-year-old woman was fatally shot in her residence by a teenage boy. The shooting occurred in the Jackson Park Highlands neighborhood, specifically the 6800 block of South Cornell Avenue, according to the Chicago Tribune. The victim, identified as Tatanisha Jackson, suffered four gunshots to the head and was taken to UChicago Medicine where she was pronounced dead.
Details surrounding the incident continue to unfold, with neighbors revealing a disturbing account. The assailant, reported to be a 17-year-old boy, was allegedly waiting inside the home and attacked Jackson as she entered, given her husband and young son. "I guess the guy had came through the back, kicked the door down," neighbor Wendy Herring stated, as reported by ABC 7 Chicago.
A gun was recovered at the scene, but it is not clear if the victim knew her assailant or what the motive behind the shooting might have been. The shock of the violence has deeply affected the community, with another resident, Monique Tropet, expressing her dismay in an interview with ABC 7 Chicago. "I just can't even process this, unfortunately. It just seems so sad and scary," Tropet said.
The effect of the crime on the family of Tatanisha Jackson is a paramount concern, as Wendy Herring reflected on the immediate aftermath. Witnessing such a traumatic event is sure to have a lasting impact, particularly on Jackson's young son who was present during the shooting. "I'm hoping he can get through it. It's going to be hard," Herring remarked.
Currently, no one is in custody and the investigation is ongoing, per the Chicago Tribune.
