A somber pall settled over Muskegon after multiple shooting incidents occurred over Labor Day weekend, one of which resulted in injuries to a child. Yesterday, gunfire struck a vehicle near Laketon Avenue and Elwood Street, resulting in what the Muskegon Police Department reported as glass-related injuries to the vehicle's occupants, including a child, according to FOX17.
Details surrounding the incident remain scarce. However, an investigation is currently underway, and Muskegon police haven't provided specifics on what triggered the shooting, nor information on potential suspects. Nearby, a scene with police tape and evidence markers was noted by a 13 ON YOUR SIDE crew near Emmanuel Tabernacle Church, but authorities have not confirmed if the incidents are connected, as reported by WZZM13. Yet, a local resident expressed concern, telling WZZM13 "clearly a drive by," adding that violence in the area has been on the rise in recent years.
Muskegon Heights witnessed two fatal shootings: the death of 29-year-old Michael Stewart early Sunday morning and the killing of a 48-year-old man on Saturday night amidst a party dispute. The latter's identity has yet to be disclosed. These incidents add to the urgings of community members for any witnesses or those with information to step forward and assist in the police investigations. Sources such as WOODTV reveal the deep concern citizens have for their own safety in the face of such events.
Police are actively seeking information from the public. Those with knowledge of the shootings are encouraged to contact the Muskegon Police Department at (231) 724-6750 or to remain anonymous, they may reach out to Silent Observer at (231) 722-7463, as both sources stressed.
