The National Weather Service has issued a coastal flood advisory for parts of Washington D.C. and the surrounding area in effect until midnight EDT tonight. Residents and visitors in the District of Columbia, Arlington County, and the City of Alexandria should prepare for possible shoreline inundation as tidal levels are expected to reach up to one foot above ground level.

A particularly precarious time for these areas will be around the high tide, which will occur at Washington Channel at 9:28 AM and 9:47 PM, with Alexandria's high tide at 9:46 AM and 10:05 PM. The NWS warns of possible "shoreline inundation along portions of the seawall adjacent to Ohio Drive and the Hains Point Loop Road, and near the Tidal Basin." Furthermore, water is also expected to approach the curb near the intersection of King Street and, Strand Street in Alexandria.

Beyond the coastal flood advisory, the weather outlook for the Washington D.C. area suggests a mixed bag with sporadic showers today and temperatures rising to a comfortable high near 83 degrees. Following the isolated showers, which have a 20% chance of occurring before 11 AM, the skies will remain mostly cloudy, according to the NWS forecast for today.

Tonight the skies will clear up to be partly cloudy, with lows settling around 62 degrees. As for the upcoming days, the forecast anticipates sunny to mostly sunny conditions, with highs hovering in the low 80s and nighttime lows maintaining a consistent pattern in the low 60s. The NWS also indicates a slight chance of showers on Saturday night, where the chance of precipitation sits at 20%.

The warning issued by the National Weather Service cautions those in the advisory areas to be prepared and take the necessary actions to protect flood-prone property. "If travel is required," they note, "allow extra time as some roads may be closed. Do not drive around barricades or through water of unknown depth." Detailed tidal information and safety measures are provided on their website for those seeking further guidance amidst the flood advisory.
