After an intensive search, U.S. Marshals have apprehended a Columbus man wanted for a fatal shooting that took place outside a Waffle House near the Ohio State University campus back in April. The suspect, 19-year-old Jaquan Curry, was arrested this morning in Canal Winchester, solidifying the culmination of a four-month manhunt following the death of 38-year-old Ronald Diggs.
In a release provided by Michael Black with the United States Marshal’s Office, Southern District of Ohio, the arrest occurred on Byrn Moor Lane by the Southern Ohio Fugitive Apprehension Strike Team. The NBC4i report details that Curry is charged with the murder of Diggs, who was fatally shot in the chest during an early morning brawl that had spilled out from within the confines of the local Waffle House.
As per witness accounts, approximately 15 to 20 individuals were involved in a fight that began inside the eatery and continued onto North High Street, according to information obtained by The Dispatch. It was at this location, directly across from the Ohio Union on campus, that Diggs was shot.
Following the violent incident, Franklin County Municipal court documents reveal, a witness steered authorities towards Curry, having told police he had observed Curry "reportedly punched a man before pulling out a gun and shooting Diggs," stated in the lethality of the punch before pulling out a gun, as reported by ABC6. An arrest warrant for Curry was issued the same day as the murder charge was filed in Franklin County court.
Witnesses to the event spoke to the Columbus police, recounting how the altercation that led to the tragic shooting began inside the Waffle House at 1712 North High St. This latest arrest brings a measure of closure to what has been a months-long pursuit for justice in the aftermath of the disorder and violence resulted in the loss of Ronald Diggs’s life.
