The investigation into the death of Massachusetts State Police Trooper Enrique Delgado-Garcia, who passed away after a training exercise, will be transferred away from the Worcester County District Attorney's Office due to conflicts of interest, announced District Attorney Joseph Early Jr. NBC Boston reported that the 25-year-old recruit died following an incident during a defensive tactics exercise at the State Police Academy in New Braintree.
Early, stricken by the loss of someone so integrated into the heart of his office, said, "Everyone loved Enrique," enforcing the weight of the tragedy that has befallen the community and Enrique's loved ones, as noted by NBC Boston. Delgado-Garcia, before his time at the academy, had been employed for 18 months as a victim witness advocate in Early's office, which has inevitably led to the search for an impartial body to manage the ongoing investigation, according to details shared by 7News WHDH from Early's press conference.
"There's no way this office can handle this," Early stated, emphasizing the need for an external inquiry free from entanglements that could cloud judgment or influence the findings, as per 7News WHDH. However, until a new agency takes over, state police detectives assigned to the DA’s office will continue their work, with the goal of ensuring an investigation that is free from internal affiliations or bias.
Despite the immediate medical response, Delgado-Garcia succumbed to his injuries at the hospital, where, in a bittersweet gesture amidst the sorrow, he was posthumously sworn in and pinned with his trooper badge. His aspiration was tragically realized as his life was commemorated and mourned. The district attorney confirmed that an autopsy has been conducted, though the cause and manner of death remain undisclosed pending the final report. The profound loss is deeply felt, as Early and others recalled Delgado-Garcia’s unwavering dedication to helping others, often staying late to assist those in need.
