A tragic incident unfolded on the Florida Turnpike in Lake County this past Saturday night, resulting in the death of a 66-year-old Crystal River woman. The woman was behind the wheel of an SUV that failed to navigate a curve and ended up colliding with the traffic barriers, as reported by ClickOrlando.
According to details released by the Florida Highway Patrol, the accident happened around 11:10 p.m. near mile marker 283 on the northbound lanes just south of State Road 19, her failure to manage a slight rightward curve resulted in her SUV striking the inside traffic wall, followed by an uncontrollable rotation and final impact against the concrete barrier lining the outside shoulder, as described by an FHP crash report.
During this maelstrom of events, an 82-year-old man from Fruitland Park could not avoid colliding with the woman's vehicle with his own SUV, specifically hitting the rear right side of her car, according to WESH, the man remained at the scene without needing hospitalization, while the woman unfortunately succumbed to her injuries following transport to Leesburg Regional Hospital.
Adding to the tragic circumstances, the FHP noted that the woman was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the incident.
