Residents in specific Dallas neighborhoods are looking at a scheduled mosquito control spraying to combat the presence of the West Nile Virus. According to the City of Dallas, areas within the boundaries of 7000 Walling Lane (75231), bordered by Skillman Street to the north, Abrams Road to the west, Goforth Road to the east, and Northwest Highway to the south, will be sprayed between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. from Tuesday, September 17th to Wednesday, September 18th, weather permitting. This area corresponds to Council District 10. The Environmental Protection Agency has given the green light for the insecticide to be used, but it's recommended that residents take care to not directly expose themselves to the spray.
The importance of minimizing potential contact with the insecticide is emphasized; the city advises inhabitants to stay indoors during spraying. If you find yourself in a vehicle when trucks are making their rounds, it's best to keep windows up and the air conditioner running until you can no longer see the spray. Those on foot during the planned schedule should stay alert for trucks and maintain a good distance. Anyone accidentally coming into contact with the spray should thoroughly wash the area with soap and water. The spray, officials note, breaks down quickly in sunlight and leaves no residual effect.
Officials are also taking this opportunity to remind everyone in Dallas to remain vigilant against mosquito bites. With evening and nighttime being prime mosquito activity hours, they recommend residents cut down on their outdoor activities during these times. Those who need to be outdoors should consider covering up their arms and legs and opting to use mosquito repellent. It's also crucial to eliminate standing water around properties to hinder mosquito breeding, an issue that can escalate from egg to adult in as little as seven days.
