According to a statement from the City of Milwaukee website, the alternative flag features City Hall, a significant change that Bauman believes will provide a stronger connection to Milwaukee's identity.
The current "Sunrise Over the Lake" flag, known as the people's flag, came under scrutiny for lacking identifiable features of the city. "The 'Sunrise Over the Lake' flag lacks any key identifying features that we associate with Milwaukee," Bauman stated. His proposed flag design "retains basic layout and design of the People’s Flag but incorporates an image of City Hall which enhances the flag’s association with the City of Milwaukee," as per the City of Milwaukee.
Previously, on September 9, the Steering and Rules Committee voted 5-3 in favor of adopting the "Sunrise Over the Lake" flag, indicating a preference to move away from the 1955 design that has been criticized as outdated and not reflective of the city today;, as mentioned by the City of Milwaukee.
