A popular gathering place for New Orleans Saints fans, Wrong Iron, experienced a partial structural failure on a busy game day. The deck in the courtyard area gave way under the weight of a lively crowd seeking shelter from sudden rain. The incident took place amid spirited celebrations as the local team performed well against their opponents, according to a statement from bar owner Rusty White, reported by WWLTV. During the event, the porch area reportedly sank by nearly two feet but did not fully collapse.
The bar has been temporarily closed to assess and to swiftly repair the damage, ensuring that future gatherings can proceed without mishap. Initial reports from the scene indicated that five individuals were injured due to the abrupt porch descent, with one requiring hospitalization and the rest treated at the scene. The New Orleans Police Department, EMS personnel, and fire services promptly responded to the emergency as images and accounts of the porch's downfall started circulating online.
In a statement obtained by NOLA.com, White explained that "People were dancing because the Saints were doing good," the incident occurred during a time of high spirits, with fans celebrating enthusiastically. Follow-up inspections will focus on evaluating the structural integrity to prevent a recurrence, with a professional team prepared to assess and address the underlying issues.
The bar's management, in a full acknowledgment of the gravity of the situation, issued a forthright statement reinforcing their commitment to patron safety. "During today's rainstorm, our courtyard guests moved to the porch for cover, which led to unexpected porch sinkage of an estimated 1.5 feet," Wrong Iron disclosed in a statement circulated by WWLTV. They provided additional details about their initial compliance with strict construction standards and the forthcoming measures to address the current issue.
