In what proved to be a classic display of traditional football fundamentals, the Del Valle Conquistadores relied on their potent defense and an effective running game to outpace the Franklin Cougars in Friday night's showdown, ending in a 24-14 victory for Del Valle. While the buzz leading up to the game centered around Del Valle's quarterback, Jake Fette, credit was widely spread across the team.
According to KTSM, Fette was quick to acknowledge the role of his team's defense saying, "When you have a good defense, it makes it easy on the offense." The defense indeed stood tall, with pivotal plays that included stopping Franklin's offense from scoring in the first half and securing two critical interceptions in the second half.
The running game for Del Valle was nothing short of impressive, as reported by El Paso Times. Shelton Fuller and Fette himself were integral to the ground attack, with Fuller rushing for 132 yards and Fette adding another 68. As Franklin opted to retreat into coverage, Del Valle's offense carved through their defensive line repeatedly.
"They gave it to us," Del Valle's coach Contreras said, as per El Paso Times. He explained the circumstances, "Franklin is really good, we were just able to make some plays." The strategy was clear, keep the ball on the ground and capitalize on a defense that made the game difficult for the Cougars.
As KFOX-TV reports, that wrapped up the coverage by encouraging fans to share their game-day experiences, which extended the community involvement in the local sporting event. The game, labeled as the 'Game of the Week,' lived up to expectations, delivering both action and strategy that reaffirmed high school football's place in the heart of community sports.
