A Detroit man faces legal repercussions following an alleged instance of mail theft at the Fraser Post Office this week. Davin Lawrence, 28, has been indicted on several charges, including one count of assaulting, resisting, and obstructing a police officer, and 16 counts of mail theft, as reported by CBS News Detroit. The reported incidents took place on Monday.

Lawrence, identified by officials as a habitual offender, was purportedly caught by Fraser police while in the act of opening a mailbox at the Fraser Post Office. When police attempted to detain him, it was after Lawrence had opened the mailbox that he attempted to flee on foot, only to be apprehended later without further incident, as ClickOnDetroit details.

With the bond set at $10,000 cash/surety, Lawrence's arraignment took place in 39th Fraser District Court. The Macomb County Prosecutor Office emphasized the gravity of the charges including the potential for identity theft and the resulting long-term damage to victims. “Mail theft is not just a simple property crime—it poses a serious risk to our community by opening the door to identity theft. When individuals steal mail, they often gain access to sensitive personal information that can be used to commit fraud and cause long-lasting harm to victims. This type of crime undermines public trust and violates the privacy of citizens. We are committed to prosecuting those who engage in such acts and protecting the security of our community," said Macomb County Prosecutor Peter J. Lucido.

Lawrence's next court appearances include a probable cause hearing on September 11 and a preliminary exam slated for September 18, according to court documents. Affirming a commitment to uphold justice, the Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office stated, "All that are accused of a crime are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law," as per the Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office news release.
