A fire broke out in a residential building on Baylis Street in Duluth Saturday afternoon, leading to a substantial emergency response from the Duluth Fire Department. According to a news release, the call came in at 2:12 PM, prompting several fire crews to rush to the scene, where flames had seized hold of the porch and rapidly spread to the roof and attic of the fourplex.

The firefighters from Miller Hill, Headquarters, UMD, and Lincoln Park worked in unison to quell the blaze with additional help later arriving from Spirit Valley, while the Duluth Police Department, Minnesota Power, and Saint Louis County 911 provided indispensable support during the incident.

Of the four housing units afflicted by the incident, three sustained smoke and water damage, rendering them uninhabitable, with one of them already vacant before the tragedy struck. Two of the units bore the direct ravages of the fire while the damage estimates for the property range between $300,000 and $400,000.

The cause of the fire remains a mystery under investigation by the Duluth Fire Marshal's office. Fire officials have not released additional details regarding the potential origins of the blaze at this time.
