An East Point firefighter was injured while responding to a series of fires caused by approximately 6,000 feet of fallen power lines yesterday. The power line failure near an electric substation on Ben Hill Road initiated brush fires and even resulted in a structure fire along Rolling Brook Trail, according to reports from FOX 5 Atlanta.
The fires began to spread when a tree, perhaps unwilling to simply stand by as the electric calamity encroached, fell and collided with high-voltage lines. This sparked flames that forced firefighters to scramble to contain the damage. The incident quickly knocked out power for residents and required intervention by Georgia Power to restore electricity by early this morning, as reported by Atlanta News First. Although power was reconnected, one of the blazes intensified when it hit a ruptured gas line, escalating the already urgent situation.
The East Point Fire Department was able to contain and extinguish the brush fires. However, the structure fire along Rolling Brook Trail persisted, requiring continued attention from emergency crews. Amidst the turmoil, one firefighter suffered a leg injury, necessitating medical evaluation. Fortunately, no further injuries were reported in the incident.
Residents reported that around 6 p.m. on Tuesday, they experienced a sudden blackout, followed by several loud explosions throughout the neighborhood as emergency teams worked to manage the crisis. One explosion was captured on camera by Atlanta News First, showing the severity of the situation. Restoration efforts are ongoing as firefighters and utility workers continue to repair the damage on Rolling Brook Trail.
