Emergency responders, attired in hazmat suits, were called to the scene of a suspected ammonia leak at an Imo's production facility located on 17th Street and Dr. Martin Luther King Drive, just north of downtown St. Louis. Fox 2 reported that the incident prompted the closure of Martin Luther King Drive between 14th and 18th streets as firefighters worked to identify the source of the leak. With the potential threat pinpointed, decontamination protocols were initiated for those entering the area.
Firefighters employed a ladder truck to create a water curtain, which helps to dissolve ammonia vapors, effectively pulling them into the sewer system for disposal, as detailed by First Alert 4. The strategy was deployed at the intersection of 17th and Delmar, not far from the City Museum. Although the leak felt fairly contained, venting from the building's ceiling led to the formation of an ammonia cloud along Delmar, the fumes present a potential hazard, as inhalation can cause severe lung damage.
The response occurred in the early hours, with crews arriving around 4 a.m. on Monday. KSDK noted that even with windows rolled up, the fumes overwhelmed senses a block away from Imo's Pizza Headquarters. Delmar Street was temporarily closed while efforts were underway to locate and address the source of the fumes.
As a precaution, authorities began examining the nearby apartments and lofts, responding to residents who had reported smelling the odor. Officials continue to monitor the situation to ascertain that the community remains protected from harm. Ongoing updates and advisories will be broadcast to keep the public informed on the status of the incident and any necessary action they might need to take.
