Emergency services were tested at the Eastern States Exposition grounds last Thursday night when the West Springfield Fire Department was alerted to a fire at 11:45pm, shortly after the fairground had closed for the evening. According to the department's Facebook update, a blaze had been detected in C Barn, leading to the rapid evacuation of animals inside.
The swift action by fire, police, and exposition staff ensured the fire was contained and managed without significant injury. The deployed sprinkler system was effective in protecting life and livestock, with the Mass Fire Services Drone team confirming that "a total of 161 horses are safe and recovered with minor injuries," as reported by the West Springfield Fire Department. Despite the urgency of the situation, the collective efforts of on and off duty responders, local police, the State Police, MEMA, and others involved show a high level of preparedness in facing such emergencies.
As of now, the cause of the blaze remains under investigation by the West Springfield Fire Department, alongside the State Police attached to the Fire Marshal's office.
