Governor Greg Abbott has announced a significant injection of funds to boost career training in Texas. Fabens Independent School District (ISD) is set to receive a grant exceeding $344,000 from the Texas Workforce Commission (TWC), aimed at enhancing career and technical education (CTE) programs.
The grant, as part of the Jobs and Education for Texans (JET) initiative, will equip students with the necessary skills to secure high-demand, well-paid jobs upon graduation. According to a press release from the Governor's office, the partnership with El Paso Community College is expected to benefit at least 126 students, training them as registered nurses. Describing the importance of workforce investment, Abbott said, “Investing in our future workforce is crucial for Texas to remain the Best State for Business, the best state for jobs, and the best state for opportunity.”
The JET grant will purchase and install the necessary equipment for the CTE programs. “Today’s JET grant will help Fabens ISD provide for instruction for hundreds of students training to fill high-demand occupations,” TWC Chairman Bryan Daniel stated, acknowledging the collaborative nature of the grant’s goal between local partners and the TWC. Earlier, in a function attended by students interested in career and technical fields, officials presented the award at Fabens High School, as per the official statement.
These grants, funded by the Texas Legislature, reduce start-up costs for developing CTE programs across various educational institutions. They ensure that the supplied equipment trains students for jobs that are in high demand. TWC Commissioner Representing Labor Alberto Treviño III handed over the grant, emphasizing the importance of preparing a skilled workforce for the future landscape of jobs. Guided by legislative provisions, the TWC continues to fund these vital assets for education, intending to match the pacing needs of the state's economy.
