In an eco-conscious stride, Falcon Field Airport in Mesa is now offering sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), stepping up its game in the fight against climate change. As reported in a City of Mesa press release, Avflight Mesa, a prominent fixed base operator at the airport, joined hands with Avfuel Corporation to secure a regular supply of this cleaner-burning fuel alternative.
The delivery of Neste MY Sustainable Aviation FuelTM marked its arrival on August 28, with each truckload holding about 8,000 gallons. Such volume is slated to cut down roughly 19 tons of carbon emissions relative to standard jet fuel, the environmental equivalent of removing 4.5 passenger vehicles from U.S. roads for one year. Avflight Mesa's initiation of SAF usage is not just a local leap towards sustainability but positions it as the first among its 26 locations across North America and Europe to implement this change.
Falcon Field’s airport director, Corinne Nystrom, expressed enthusiasm regarding the move, reiterating its alignment with Mesa’s Climate Action Plan which focuses on safeguarding the environment and the city's natural resources. “We’re thrilled Avflight chose Mesa as a launching point for a more sustainable future," stated Nystrom.
Complemented by Avfuel's comprehensive fuel services and support in sustainability endeavors, this Mesa initiative mirrors Mesa’s broader climate objectives, aiming to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. The utilization of SAF at Falcon Field is set to play a significant role in these ambitions, supporting the airport’s expanding operations while mitigating overall emissions. Aaron Mauer, senior regional manager for Avflight, underscored the importance of this step, “The addition of SAF to Avflight Mesa’s overall sustainability initiatives furthers our commitment to reducing the production of greenhouse gasses and provides our customers the opportunity to work toward their sustainability goals,” said Mauer.
On the national scale, Avflight is pursuing sustainable aviation operations, which aren't restricted solely to the deployment of SAF at Falcon Field. The company has also received sustainability certification for all its U.S. locations and is working on infrastructure for electric flight options, such as the installation of electric charging stations in strategic sites, in collaboration with BETA Technologies.
