In a separate but potentially related incident early this morning, two Houston Police officers fatally shot an armed man in the Sunnyside neighborhood. Assistant Chief Yasar Bashir said officers were checking the area after hearing gunshots when they encountered a man near a vehicle with a broken window. This man reportedly began firing upon officers, prompting them to return fire, ultimately resulting in his death. The officers involved in the shootout have been with the department for four years and will be placed on administrative leave as per departmental policy, a standard procedure during such investigations. A semi-automatic weapon was recovered at the scene.
Further complicating the violent weekend in Sunnyside, ABC13 reported the discovery of an additional gunshot victim found deceased a few houses away from where the officer-involved shooting took place.
