A somber scene unfolded on northbound I-196 in Casco Township, where one individual's life was claimed in a vehicular tragedy that left another in serious condition. While the Allegan County Sheriff’s Office continues its investigation, early reports indicate the rollover happened on Friday afternoon near mile marker 25, as reported by FOX 17 and several other local news outlets.
According to Mlive, the incident occurred at approximately 5:35 p.m. when an SUV, for reasons yet to be determined, veered off the road and overturned multiple times in a ditch. Emergency services responded promptly, but despite the urgency of their efforts, the driver succumbed to their injuries after being transported to the hospital. The passenger, while seriously injured, is reported to be in stable condition. Speed and alcohol have been tentatively dismissed as contributing factors, however, it was noted that seat belts were not in use.
The closure of the northbound lanes following the accident created temporary disruptions, but the thoroughfare has since reopened, as noted by WOODTV. Numerous agencies, including the Michigan State Police, South Haven Area Fire Service, Allegan County’s Crash Reconstruction Team, and South Haven Ambulance, assisted at the scene.
While the ACSO acknowledges the contribution of these teams in managing the aftermath of the crash, the identities of the victims have not been released.
