It was an eventful afternoon on August 15th when Pierce County deputies were dispatched to a reported armed robbery at Saars Market, according to the Pierce County Sheriff's Department Blog. The suspects, a father and son duo, allegedly stole alcohol and when confronted, they engaged in a physical altercation with employees and bystanders, deploying bear spray before making a getaway in a maroon Honda sedan. The PCSO Blog detailed that the deputies received a tip about the vehicle, leading to a pursuit.
The chase ended abruptly when the suspects crashed their vehicle at an apartment complex and attempted to flee on foot, likely unaware that K9 deputy Eddie was in hot pursuit. Despite the warning from his handler, the first suspect continued to run but was quickly apprehended by Eddie. "The suspect was warned but continued to run. K9 Eddie sprinted after and captured the first suspect," reported the PCSO Blog. The second suspect's attempt at evasion was foiled by an alert citizen who noticed him trying to conceal himself under a flight of stairs.
The quick resolution of the incident led to the arrest of both suspects, who were subsequently booked into the Pierce County Jail on robbery charges, with an additional charge for eluding levied against the son. The success, however, was bittersweet. The Sheriff’s Department Blog revealed that K9 Eddie would be retiring, as his partner had been promoted to Sergeant. "Unfortunately there is a sad story to this case. This was K9 Eddie’s last call of his career," the department expressed on their blog.
While the community and the department lament the end of K9 Eddie’s storied career, they celebrate the legacy of a dog whose service has been nothing short of commendable. "K9 Eddie, your partner, your department and your community appreciate your service! Enjoy your retirement," the PCSO Blog warmly noted, marking the end of an era for the dependable K9 officer who had served the community with unwavering fidelity.
