A large pipeline explosion occurred in the Houston suburb of La Porte earlier today, prompting immediate evacuations within the affected area. The incident, which began at 9:55 a.m., has generated a vast plume of smoke visible for miles and has led to power outages impacting nearly 4,700 customers in Harris County, according to KSAT.
Causing grass fires and the burning of power poles, the fire has compelled the La Porte emergency services to put forth an evacuation order for residents of the Brookglen neighborhood. As stated by La Porte City Secretary Lee Woodward in an interview with KTRK-TV, "Please avoid the area and follow law enforcement direction. Further details will be released as available." The cause of the fire has not yet been determined, and response teams are on the scene endeavoring to control the flames.
Imagery obtained by KTRK shows the extent of the damage with a local park impacted and firefighters diligently working to protect nearby homes. There are also several businesses in proximity to the fire, including a Walmart, which is being monitored for risk.
CenterPoint Energy, while clarifying that the fire "is unrelated to the company’s natural gas operations or equipment," is keeping an eye on the situation.
