Portland's Montavilla neighborhood was the scene of a dramatic rescue yesterday morning after a blaze erupted at a residence located at 8317 SE Morrison St., summoning fire crews to a second-alarm fire that sent a plume of black smoke into the air; the incident, confirmed by KOIN, was initially reported as an "outside fire spreading to a single family residence with a potential of a rescue in the basement."
The urgency was palpable as a local police officer, arriving before fire crews, made an initial but thwarted attempt to enter the burning building and rescue the trapped woman, the intense heat and smoke proving too formidable of a barrier, a resident of the house similarly attempted the rescue only to be rebuffed by the inferno; following these attempts, it was Portland Firefighters who quickly managed to reach the woman, as described by KGW, reaching her within 10 minutes and requesting a mobile air pack to help her breathe as the "heavy fire" encroached on the basement, with the dog in tow, she was guided up the stairs to safety by the firefighter.
The collaborative effort of fire crews was critical in tackling the aggressive flames, they worked diligently to contain the fire that had gained significant momentum threatening the structure's integrity; the swift actions leading to this successful extrication mirror past instances where teamwork has meant the thin line between life and death.
With firefighters at the front lines, the emergency unfolded near Southeast 82nd Avenue and Morrison Street around 11 a.m., attracting the attention of local media; The Oregonian conveyed that the woman and her dog were trapped in a basement bathroom of a 1½-story wood frame home, providence becoming their aid as the crews responded to the call of the inferno that sought to claim more than just a structure.
