A confrontation at the Berkeley Marina escalated into violence on Sunday, leading to a windsurfer being hospitalized and a fisherman arrested, per details from the Berkeley Police Department. Berkeley police officers were dispatched to the marina at about 3:08 p.m. following reports of a stabbing incident.
The altercation began after the windsurfer's equipment reportedly became entangled in the fisherman's line, resulting in the loss of his fishing pole in the Bay, KRON4 reported. Upon reaching the shore, the fisherman, identified by authorities as 31-year-old Jimmy Ray Ellis of Hercules, confronted the windsurfer and, following a verbal dispute, allegedly stabbed the victim in the shoulder with a knife.
The victim, a man in his 50s, received medical attention at Highland Hospital for injuries that were not believed to be life-threatening. Berkeley police, upon arrival at the scene, observed Ellis attempting to drive away on University Avenue and detained him without further incident.
Ellis, who attempted to flee following the altercation, was apprehended by police and has been arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon. He later posted bail and, according to online booking records, was released from custody. However, the date of his next court appearance was not immediately available, the Berkeley Scanner reports.
