Residents in parts of east Tennessee are facing imminent flood conditions as an upstream dam floodgate release continues to affect Knox and Sevier counties. According to an update from the National Weather Service Morristown TN, the flood warning has now been extended until 7:30 PM EDT Tuesday, September 30th. The areas near the French Broad River are particularly susceptible to rising water levels and evacuations are already underway in certain low-lying neighborhoods as a precautionary measure.
Local authorities are urging residents to take necessary safety precautions, including self-evacuating if their residences are threatened. Officials warn, "Turn around, don`t drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood deaths occur in vehicles."
Despite the sober realities on the ground, the broader forecast in Knoxville suggests that weather conditions may improve over the next few days. The National Weather Service predicts a decrease in precipitation with cloudy skies gradually becoming mostly sunny by Tuesday, September 30th, and remaining generally sunny through the remainder of the week. Highs are expected to reach the low 80s, with calm winds.
Nevertheless, emergency services continue to monitor river levels and will be on standby to respond as needed. Despite the sunny outlook, residents need to remain vigilant and maintain awareness of their local conditions. "Stay away or be swept away. River banks and culverts can become unstable and unsafe," advises the National Weather Service, emphasizing the sudden and unpredictable nature of flooding.
River flooding, which has been persistent in northeast Tennessee, is expected to slowly subside without additional heavy rains. The Hazardous Weather Outlook issued by the National Weather Service Morristown TN assesses no further hazardous weather for the forthcoming days two through seven, providing some reassurances amidst ongoing challenges. As the community braces and continues to respond to the demanding present circumstances, eyes cautiously turn to the skies, hopeful for the clear days forecasted.
