In a sobering update to a tragic event, Duncan Park McQuarrie, the 39-year-old Florida man accused of causing a horrific head-on collision that left a San Jose woman and her teenage son dead, has been released from the hospital and summarily booked into the Santa Clara County Jail, according to officials. NBC Bay Area reports that McQuarrie was arrested yesterday following his discharge from medical care, facing allegations of drunk driving, and is now charged with two counts of murder, amongst other offenses.
The fatal crash, which occurred last Monday, saw McQuarrie's Toyota Tacoma speeding in the wrong direction down Highway 85 and colliding with a Tesla Model Y, the impact of which claimed the lives of 47-year-old Rebecca Olsen and her 14-year-old son, Charlie George Olsen. The collision happened south of Santa Teresa Boulevard, as highlighted in NBC Bay Area's coverage. The suspect was allegedly under the influence at the time.
As further details emerge, KRON4 notes the defendant's proximity to greater punishment due to the severe consequences of his actions, the Santa Clara County District Attorney's Office recounting a witness's observation of McQuarrie standing outside his vehicle on the highway's center divider before accelerating again into oncoming traffic, prosecutors are making it clear that they intend to pursue maximum accountability for the wreckage left in his wake.
In a poignant echo of loss, Charlie's father expressed the depth of his grief to KRON4, stating, "Losing a child is the ultimate nightmare for a parent. He was my best friend." Charlie was a student newly enrolled at Summit Tahoma High School and an avid traveler who had seen more than 30 countries before his life prematurely ended. District Attorney Jeff Rosen conveyed the weight of the incident, affirming, "This criminally reckless crash destroyed a family. We will do everything in our legal power to make sure he never hurts anyone else again."
