Former state employee James Gaddis claims to have been fired for disclosing plans to construct golf courses and hotels within the state's parklands. According to the Palm Beach Post, Gaddis, who self-identifies as an "ethical whistleblower," expressed no regret for alerting the public to the proposals, saying, "I just happen to be a guy in the middle of all this and the clock was ticking, and I figured someone has to step up to the plate and stop the madness," according to NBC Miami.

Gaddis, whose job as a cartographer for the Florida Department of Environmental Protection included creating conceptual maps, described how he was assigned the task of depicting the proposed developments for nine state parks stretching from Miami to the Panhandle. These plans featured not only golf courses but also pickleball courts and sizeable 350-room hotels. He told U.S. News that these developments would be situated within some of Florida's most unspoiled and globally rare habitats.

The disclosure of the development plans led to a public backlash, which in turn prompted a pause on the controversial projects. Gaddis indicated to NBC Miami that his decision to leak the information was driven by the urgency of the situation and the potential impacts on the natural environment.

Despite putting a halt on the development plans after public opposition, Gaddis was relieved of his duties last Friday, two days following the suspension of the projects, as reported by FOX 13 News.
