A former Hernando Police officer is now behind bars on charges of rape and sexual battery while serving as a school resource officer. Hosie Porter, the officer implicated, turned himself in today and was charged with the crimes, announced DeSoto County District Attorney Matthew Barton. Local Memphis reports that although the alleged incident occurred while Porter was on duty, there is no evidence suggesting that any children were involved or harmed.
Details surrounding the incident remain scarce as the investigation proceeds, being led by the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation. Porter, who resigned from his post following the accusation of the assault that was reported last week, was being held in custody following his surrender to the authorities. Captured by the legal system he once served, he surrendered in response to serious allegations that pierced the fabric of public trust, according to WREG.
The Hernando Police Department was alerted to the allegation on September 24th. The department swiftly notified the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation and placed Porter on administrative leave until his resignation on September 30th, as per a statement retrieved by FOX13 Memphis. The specific details of the assault, including the location and victim, were not disclosed by District Attorney Barton, who emphasized the ongoing nature of the investigation.
