Sean Stevenson, a former science teacher at University City High School, has been sentenced to ten years in prison after admitting to attempting to buy sex from a minor. Pleaded guilty this past June, Stevenson was caught in a sting operation when he negotiated with an undercover officer, who he believed was a woman named Kash willing to provide him with a sexual encounter with her underage cousin. The U.S. Attorney's Office stated Thursday that Stevenson's actions were "appalling."

According to court documents, while still employed as a teacher, Stevenson used a VOIP line to seek out individuals who could fulfill his request for a sex act from a minor, offering a finder's fee and negotiating prices. In a statement obtained by the U.S. Attorney's Office, Stevenson's explicit messages detailed his preference for "high school age girls" and emphasized, "The younger the better." The investigation culminated on October 24, 2023, when Stevenson arranged a meeting that led to his arrest; the arresting officers found him with the arranged fee in cash on his person, as the U.S. Attorney's Office reported.

U.S. Attorney Tara McGrath condemned Stevenson's intent to harm a child and emphasized that the ten-year sentence sends a message about the commitment to protect the vulnerable. Likewise, California's Attorney General Bonta communicated a harsh warning for those who target children online: "If you go after children in California, we'll go after you," he stated, as reported by the Justice Department. The case represents a joint effort to combat child sexual exploitation and underscores the seriousness with which authorities take such transgressions.

Homeland Security Investigations, working with local law enforcement and the San Diego Human Trafficking Task Force, helped catch Stevenson. Chris Davis from HSI San Diego noted that Stevenson’s role as a teacher made the case especially important for protecting children. San Diego Police Chief Scott Wahl felt relieved that the task force stopped Stevenson from exploiting a young girl.

With Stevenson now sentenced to ten years in prison, it highlights the dangers even in places meant to protect children. Despite facing life imprisonment, Stevenson will serve a decade behind bars. This outcome provides closure for the community and sends a clear message to potential predators.
