Fort Worth residents with a yearning to gaze at the night sky can now check out stargazing kits from the Fort Worth Public Library. In partnership with the local Fort Worth Astronomical Society, the Library has introduced telescopes as a part of new stargazing kits available for checkout. According to the City of Fort Worth, these kits contain not just a telescope, but also an eyepiece, moon filter, air blower, star locator, and necessary accessories for a backyard cosmic expedition.
Bruce Campbell, president of the Fort Worth Astronomical Society and avid stargazer since childhood, reflected on his lifelong fascination with the stars during an interview where he recalled receiving a guide to space as a young boy. "The more I learned about night sky the more objects I wanted to see with my scope," Campbell said, as per the City of Fort Worth. He also encourages aspiring astronomers to bring their questions to one of the Society's monthly meetings or Prairie Sky/Star Party events.
Kathryn King, who oversees the Library's Collection Management, is focused on enriching the catalog with experiences that extend beyond traditional media. The introduction of stargazing kits followed a similar successful inclusion of a digital memory kit. King reportedly gets ideas from other libraries as well, showing responsiveness to public interests and trends.
Apart from lending out the equipment, the Library also provides beginners with instruction manuals and two books to help demystify the night sky. "Stargazing can be fun and exciting, but there’s much to learn and understand," Campbell explained, as cited by the City of Fort Worth. He advises novices to start by observing the moon, which is visible most nights, and then possibly move on to planets and constellations. He also warns never to look directly at the sun without a solar filter, an especially pertinent reminder during events such as solar eclipses.
