As the 15-year anniversary of Maryanne Humphrey's murder approaches, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) is making a renewed plea to the public for assistance. Humphrey, a grandmother and Circle K employee in Douglas County, was fatally shot on September 19, 2009, during an attempted robbery at the store where she worked. The case, which has remained unsolved for a decade and a half, took a violent turn when the 63-year-old grandmother confronted her assailant, a masked man who had entered the store with the intent to rob it.
Drawing on both surveillance footage and accounts from the time of the crime, the GBI described how Humphrey fought bravely, even managing to unmask the perpetrator before she was tragically killed. Yet, her killer evades justice still, according to Fox5 Atlanta. Despite this elusive pursuit, Humphrey's identity as both a mother and a grandmother remains central to these reminders of her life and the tragic circumstances of her passing.
Today, a GBI press conference is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. at the agency's headquarters in Decatur, where both law enforcement and a spokesperson for Humphrey's family will underscore the ongoing investigation. The GBI has extended an open call to anyone who might have information that could breathe new life into the case. As WSBTV reports, authorities seek new leads to solve the case and invite the public to help them close this painful chapter for the Humphrey family.
The GBI and Douglas County Sheriffs are jointly urging the community to play whatever part they can, in bringing closure to Humphrey's relatives and to serve the collective conscience that justice. Anyone with potentially useful information is encouraged to reach out to the GBI or the Douglas County Sheriff's Office.
