The Governor has tapped William "Bill" King and re-upped the tenure of Michelle Brewer for the OneStar National Service Commission. This group, vital to fostering civic engagement in the state, takes the helm in promoting volunteerism and supervising AmeriCorps programs within Texas, as announced by the Office of the Texas Governor.
Appointed after being honorably discharged from the U.S. Navy in May of 2023, King brings to the Commission more than 30 years of military service. His career as a Navy SEAL—and co-owner of Mithril Defense, a background that's dense with leadership and grit, is a pedigree seemingly written for such a role in public service. Serving on advisory boards for both the Navy SEAL Foundation and the Navy SEAL Museum reflects a continuity of his commitment to service, extending beyond his decorated military tenure.
Brewer, reappointed to the Commission, currently heads the Jefferson County Long Term Recovery Group as its executive director. Her experiences are diverse, extending through multiple tiers of emergency management and disaster recovery. These include her contributions to the Texas Department of Emergency Management Incident Support Task Force, the Disaster Leadership Team, and her engagement with the Texas Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster and Lamar University's Center for Resiliency.
With King's term concluding in March 2027, and Brewer's in March 2026, their stewardship stands poised to impact the shape of Texas's volunteer sector for years to come.
