The City of Grand Prairie recently garnered accolades for its economic development efforts, having been awarded the 2024 Excellence in Economic Development Silver Award by the International Economic Development Council (IEDC). The honor was bestowed upon the City’s initiatives focused on nurturing entrepreneurial ventures and small businesses through their transformative Entrepreneur U and Franchise U programs, as reported by the City of Grand Prairie.

Grand Prairie's Economic Development Department has managed to significantly uplift many aspiring entrepreneurs by leveraging these programs. Over 600 participants have been supported, being equipped to not only kickstart but also to successfully maintain their business ventures. According to Kay Brown-Patrick, the Business Manager of Economic Development, per the City of Grand Prairie, “I am excited that our programs have been recognized with this prestigious award”. Grand Prairie's program goals include detailed business planning, securing funding, and simplifying the complex MWBE certification process. These measures have proven effective, with the City witnessing notable achievements such as securing substantial funding and garnering multiple business registrations and MWBE certifications.

The success of the initiative is reflected in the substantial impact the programs have made on the City's economy, including increases in operational efficiency and certification attainments. Furthermore, Entrepreneur U is set to broaden its horizon by launching an 8-week cohort tailored for second-stage entrepreneurs, which will aim at enhancing their operational efficiency. Meanwhile, Franchise U continues to provide virtual workshops to enlighten participants on franchising, covering an array of topics from opportunities and costs to financing options and legal conundrums.
