A firearm was discovered in the parking lot of the Rockford Community Services & Administration Building yesterday morning, during the process of children being dropped off for the first day of preschool. According to FOX 17, a parent found the gun on the pavement, secured the weapon in their vehicle, and alerted authorities. Police responded to the scene and took possession of the firearm.
Superintendent Dr. Steve Matthews, in a letter to the parents, confirmed the event stating that the gun had fallen from another parent's vehicle while dropping off their child. This letter was shared with parents of students at the preschool, Parkside Elementary, and River Valley Academy, as reported by WZZM13. Dr. Matthews emphasized the safety of the students, asserting that the firearm never entered the building nor came into possession of any student. Furthermore, he thanked the quick response of the security department and local law enforcement.
