East Maui residents looking to responsibly discard their household metals and various other recyclables can mark their calendars for the Hāna metals recycling event on September 20 and 21. According to a Maui County announcement, the collection will take place at the Hāna Recycling Center, located across from Hāna Landfill on Waikoloa Road. The event runs from 8 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. on both days.
The items you can to drop off include the usual suspects like scrap metal, appliances, propane tanks, and auto batteries but also tires. Given that the hauling capacity out of Hāna is rather limited, attendees should be prepared for a first-come, first-served scenario, which might mean an early start is advisable. Assistance in unloading will be provided by staff from both Hammerhead Metals Recycling and Hāna Landfill.
However, if you were planning to rid yourself of old electronics, you'll have to wait – e-waste is not accepted at this event. To ensure safe and environmentally sound disposal, small machines need to be fully drained of all liquids before drop-off, and batteries must be taken out from small machines. It’s important to note that this event strictly caters to residential recycling, so commercial entities will need to find alternative arrangements for their recyclables.
The upcoming recycling event is sponsored by the County of Maui Environmental Protection and Sustainability Division, demonstrating a continued commitment to ecological stewardship. Should you want to learn more about the initiative or get details on the Tow & Scrap program, you are to directly reach out to the County of Maui Abandoned Vehicles & Metals office via telephone. In addition, there are separate numbers provided for large metals recycling information and electronics recycling queries. In the unfortunate instance of stumbling upon an abandoned vehicle, residents should contact the Maui Police Department's non-emergency line.
For those who miss this opportunity or have e-waste specifically, mark the next Hāna metals collection event in your diaries – set for December 6 and 7, which will be accepting electronics. This regular event is part of a series held every three months.
