The Hawai‘i Department of Transportation (HDOT) is putting drivers on notice for upcoming nighttime roadwork on Kaʻahumanu Avenue. The work is set to close both eastbound and westbound lanes between Kāne Street and Lono Avenue, starting on Thursday, Sept. 19. This closure will accommodate water line work required for the new Maui Palms Hampton Inn project. According to HDOT, full westbound lane closures are planned, along with the closing of eastbound left-turn pocket and the inside through lane near School Street.

For those driving at night, detours will be available. Motorists can make use of Lono Avenue to connect with West Kamehameha Avenue, which in turn links to Kāne Street, Kahului Beach Road, and back onto Kaʻahumanu Avenue. The nighttime work window is between 9:30 p.m., on Thursday to 5:30 a.m., Friday. Traffic signs and cones will be set up to guide vehicles through the area, but drivers should take extra care navigating around the work zones.

The necessity of this construction during nighttime hours falls within a sensitive period known as seabird fallout season, which runs from Sept. 15 to Dec. 15. During this time, fledgling seabirds, taking their inaugural flights, can become confused by artificial lights. HDOT has stated that the contractor is collaborating with the Department of Land and Natural Resources Division of Forestry and Wildlife (DLNR) to adhere to best management practices and minimize impacts on the birds. These practices were developed in consultation with the DLNR to allow for safe continuation of the work without disrupting the seabirds' natural behaviors.

Further night closures are expected throughout the month, necessitating motorists to remain vigilant when planning nighttime travel. For additional updates on the traffic impact and work schedule, travelers can visit HDOT's website.
