Tragedy unfolded earlier this morning at an Apalachee High School in Winder, Georgia, where a shooting event took the lives of at least two individuals and injured several others. The Barrow County Sheriff's Office dispatched multiple law enforcement agencies to the scene around 10:30 a.m. following reports of an active shooter, as confirmed by FOX5. Authorities said that at least one person is in custody in relation to the incident.
The school was placed on hard lockdown in the morning, and Grady Memorial Hospital reported receiving one victim with a gunshot wound. The flow of information initially came in fragments as the situation unfolded. A local hospital source confirmed to CNN about receiving patients with gunshot wounds, while the Georgia State Patrol acknowledged their response to the active scene.
Outside the high school, at least five ambulances were spotted, along with a significant law enforcement presence. Video footage showed a medical helicopter airlifting a patient from the scene, and students appeared to gather on a football field near the school, where they seemed to engage in prayer. The Barrow County Sheriff’s Office, in a statement obtained by WSOCTV, mentioned that "Casualties have been reported, however details on the number or their conditions is not available at this time."
Apalachee High School joined a list that no institution ever wants to be part of. The Barrow County Sheriff's Office and other agencies are continuing their investigation and will provide updates as further details become available.
