Amidst the growing concern as Hurricane Helene advances toward Florida's Gulf Coast, various rescue teams across the nation, including Colorado Task Force 1, have begun deployment preparations for relief efforts. WSVN reports that the Colorado-based team is trained and prepared to handle this type of emergency, possessing a high skill level needed for search and rescue. As per their statement, "We’ve done this before and quite frankly, we’re prepared for it. We’re trained for it. We have the right personnel for it."

Comprised of 45 members, Colorado Task Force 1 is set to join several other specialized teams to support local agencies. Their extensive experience sets them apart, as evident from their preparation to function autonomously for a minimum of two weeks. However, with the styles of approach being consistent for each storm, Task Force 1 actively plans to accurately assess and respond to the varying challenges presented by Hurricane Helene. According to a South Metro Fire Rescue (SMFR) update on X, seven of their personnel will to be deploying with Colorado Task Force 1, providing additional support for the anticipated landfall.

Rescue efforts aren't the only form of assistance gathering momentum. Global Empowerment Mission (GEM), a Doral-based nonprofit, has taken strides in assembling essential kits and mobilizing resources in anticipation of the hurricane's landfall. GEM's executive board member Andres Asion has emphasized that the initial relief efforts are crucial, stating, "All the essentials you would need to be able to survive for the first couple, three days, four days and then send in more aid as needed." This proactive stance by GEM ensures that aid can to be swiftly distributed post-Helene's destruction, as reported by WSVN.

With six semi-trucks bearing supplies already en route to the Florida Panhandle to support an estimated 18,000 families, GEM's logistical operations kick in prior to the storm's arrival. "So it’s very important that we’re analyzing constantly where storms and disasters are happening to make sure that we’re running ahead of time, so that when it hits, we’re right there to help these families in need," Asion told WSVN. Volunteers are currently being sought to help put together these essential kits, providing a direct opportunity for community involvement in the relief operation.

While Colorado Task Force 1 and GEM focus on their respective preparations, many parts of the Gulf Coast remain in a recovery phase from the impacts of previous hurricanes, such as last year's Hurricane Idalia. This history of successive disasters compounds the necessity for a robust and preemptive response like those of the task forces and aid organizations ahead of Hurricane Helene’s arrival. For those interested in assisting with GEM's efforts, information is available on how to volunteer to ensure that those affected by the hurricane receive the necessary support during their time of need.
