A Hilo man with a history of federal imprisonment is back in cuffs after being busted for an array of drug and gun charges. Hawaii Island police swooped in on the residence of Chico Martines, 48, during a raid this past Tuesday near Hilo Intermediate School. According to local reports on Nixle, the police confiscated a substantial amount of narcotics and a semi-automatic pistol among other illicit items.
In a detailed breakdown of the seizure, officials found 3.9 ounces of methamphetamine, a quantity of marijuana, and a potent marijuana concentrate. Additionally, Martines was harboring illegal firearms, including a pistol with its serial number deliberately obscured, and ammunition. The cash seizure amounted to $1,700. Despite federal oversight after a prior conviction, it appears Martines has flouted the conditions of his release.
Hawaii Police Department's thorough investigation culminated in Martines being slammed with multiple charges. These include first-degree promotion of dangerous and harmful drugs, possession of a controlled substance near a school, and violations of firearm regulations. His bail is steep, set at $560,000. Martines is due for his preliminary hearing in South Hilo District Court come Friday afternoon.
The previous federal sentence casts a long shadow over Martines, who continues to be under federal probation watch. His initial court appearance post-arrest will be pivotal in determining the immediate course of his future. The community, especially those associated with nearby Hilo Intermediate School, are on high alert given the drug activity's proximity to young students.
The investigation continues as detective Keith Simeona and the Area I Vice Section extend an open invite for tips from the public. Those with any knowledge about Martines's activities are encouraged to reach out to authorities.
