According to Click2Houston, the grand reopening kicks off with screenings of “Joker: Folie à Deux,” and tickets are swiftly being snapped up, signaling strong audience interest. A nod to nostalgic traditions sees the theater gifting a free gold coin to the first 800 guests, in a throwback to when cinema-goers of the early 20th century were given gold as a good luck token.
Serving up a diverse programming slate, the theater will resume its role as a focal point for fans of genre-spanning film offerings. “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” midnight shows are set to come back, along with a lineup including indie titles, cult classics, and comedy acts. As shared by the Houston Chronicle, the relaunch will see indie films “In the Summers” and Korean thriller "Sleep," joining the marquee. Furthermore, the venue is slated to be a live performance space, enhancing its allure beyond traditional cinema.
The closure of River Oaks Theater back in 2021 sparked considerable local concern, but the establishment has been revitalized under the stewardship of Culinary Khancepts. The company, also behind the Star Cinema Grill chain, has injected new life into the theater with renovations including updated seats, projection and sound systems. Houston flick aficionados expressed relief and enthusiasm, as their beloved arthouse venue, with its 80-plus years of history, once again opens its doors to the public.
Culinary Khancepts' President and CEO Omar Khan expressed profound affinity for the project, saying, "The project holds a special place in our hearts," and emphasized the company's Houston roots as fundamental to the theater's revival. The River Oaks Theatre, which culminated its previous chapter with a screening of "Nomadland," is now looking forward to not only reclaiming, but also evolving its cultural staple status within the Houston scene. With the inclusion of a restaurant, Leo's River Oaks, the theater aims to merge dining and entertainment under one roof.
