As Hurricane Helene approaches, the City of Hollywood is implementing measures to assist its residents: parking garage fees are being waived and free sand is available for pickup. According to the City's announcement, with a Tropical Storm Warning in effect, heavy rains, potential flooding, and gusty winds are poised starting today through Friday. City officials urge residents to avoid flooded roads and stay tuned to reliable sources like the National Weather Service for storm updates.

To help residents in low-lying areas, Hollywood is offering free vehicle storage in city-operated parking garages, starting midday today through the evening of Friday; this  allows residents to store their cars safely, just bring proof of residency. The spaces are available on a first-come, first-served basis—no big cars allowed. The garages are located at Garfield and Nebraska in Hollywood Beach and Van Buren and Radius downtown—vehicles left past the deadline will be subject to the usual parking charges.

Moreover, self-service sand stations for Hollywood residents looking to prepare for Hurricane Helene's expected heavy rains are now open. Locations such as Jefferson Park, Rotary Park, and Driftwood Community Center welcome residents to fill their own sandbags; bags are provided by the Department of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts but supplies are limited, with a maximum of 10 bags per household.

Flood safety is crucial during this time of rising waters, residents should call 911 should their homes be threatened, avoid driving on water-logged streets, and handle electrical devices in flooded homes with care.  The City reminds everyone to stay out of standing water, as it can harbor infections, debris, and bacteria, and advises keeping pets and children at a safe distance. In case of property damage, it's important to contact insurance providers promptly. To contribute to flood prevention efforts, residents can also consider adopting a catch basin, a move encouraged by the City to help in keeping the area safe from flooding.
