A Honolulu man faces serious charges after police at the Hilo International Airport discovered he was carrying fentanyl, among other illegal substances, in his luggage. The arrest occurred on Saturday afternoon, according to authorities.
As detailed in a report by the Hawaii Police Department, officials identified the man as 60-year-old Olaf Seyler, who initially attracted attention for attempting to pass an airsoft pistol through security. Upon further inspection, a glass smoking pipe with white powdery substances and numerous Ziploc packets believed to contain fentanyl were found in his carry-on. A digital scale and the imitation pistol were also seized.
The initial findings were alarming: the 27 packets contained a total of 24.57 net grams of fentanyl. Considering the DEA's warning that as little as 2 milligrams can be lethal, the stash represented a potentially devastatingly large number of deadly doses. The search of Seyler's luggage, conducted the following day, also led to the discovery of methamphetamine and additional fentanyl, elevating the gravity of the charges against him.
Following consultation with the County Prosecutor’s Office, detectives filed several charges, including First-degree Attempted Promotion of a Dangerous Drug, Second-degree Promotion of a Dangerous Drug, and Three counts of third-degree promotion of a dangerous drug. Seyler’s bail was subsequently set at $210,000, and he was scheduled for a Monday afternoon court appearance.
Authorities continue their investigation into the incident, and they are urging anyone with pertinent information to get in touch. Concerned individuals can contact Officer Wyatt Kaili-leong via phone or email, as provided in the official report.
