Hieu Trong Nguyen, a 51-year-old with a record of past offenses, was handed a 45-year sentence for his involvement in the double homicide of Hanh Nguyen and Long Nguyen, who were fatally gunned down in a Houston restaurant known as Tai Loi, situated in the area recognized as Little Saigon. This sentencing comes as a result of events that unfolded on October 5, 2022, and was confirmed by Harris County District Attorney Kim Ogg in a recent announcement.
The justice system processed the case following a guilty plea to murder from Nguyen. According to a statement obtained by Harris County District Attorney's office, "Two of the three men responsible for this violent double murder have been brought to justice," Ogg said. Caught on surveillance video, the brutal slaying allowed detectives from the Houston Police Department to arrest and charge two out of the three assailants.
Earlier this summer, an accomplice of Nguyen, Bich Xuan Dang, had also pleaded guilty to murder, receiving a similar 45-year prison term. While this brings a degree of resolution, the whereabouts of the third perpetrator remain unknown, prompting the district attorney's office to seek public assistance for the capture of the man still at large. Before the occurrence of the murders, the trio was involved in an extortion attempt at a nearby establishment, Café Window, demanding the manager pay a sum of $1,000. The situation escalated until an armed security guard intervened, enforcing their departure, Assistant District Attorney Chris Condon, according to a statement from the DA's office. Spurred by the altercation, the men then drove directly to Tai Loi, where they engaged in the shooting almost instantaneously upon arrival.
With his guilty plea, Nguyen forfeits the right to appeal against both conviction and sentencing. He must serve at least half of his sentenced years before eligibility for parole is granted. In the pursuit of justice, continued efforts to locate the final assailant hold considerable weight. ADA Condon remarked on the overwhelming evidence against the attackers and expressed hope for fresh leads to emerge.
