Yesterday, a somber sequence of events unfolded in Houston. According to the Houston Chronicle, Houston police officers fatally shot a man who opened fire on them with a semi-automatic weapon. This incident took place after officers, responding to a call, heard gunshots and encountered the armed individual near the 3100 block of Corksie Street.
While the officers were investigating, they saw a vehicle with a broken window. Upon questioning a nearby man, he reportedly shot at them, which led to the officers discharging their weapons, fatally wounding the man. FOX 26 Houston reports that the officers involved, both four-year veterans of the Houston Police Department's Southeast Division, were not injured and will be placed on administrative leave per policy.
Authorities claim that during a subsequent search of the area, they discovered another victim a short distance away, who was also pronounced dead from gunshot wounds at the scene. Assistant Chief Yasar Bashir informed reporters, as per the Houston Chronicle, that it was still unclear whether the two shootings were related.
The Houston Police Department’s Homicide Division, Internal Affairs, the District Attorney’s Office, and the Crime Scene Unit are now delving into the circumstances surrounding the two deaths. As part of the ongoing inquiry, the officers' body camera footage is expected to be released within 30 days.
