Houston's streets have been swarmed by pedicabs, particularly when there's a buzz around Minute Maid Park or NRG, but come October 1, the city is cracking down on operators not in compliance with local regulations.
The Houston Police Department is gearing up to impound non-permitted pedicabs, responding to major venue concerns of public safety due to reckless operation; these illegal pedicabs not only cause traffic mishaps but the operators often ignore city safety protocols, leading to unfair competition as they don't adhere to the same financial burdens of legal operators, in an interview with City of Houston News, NRG Park's Sr. Assistant General Manager Leah Mastaglio supported the city's new measures, saying, “We are committed to keeping NRG Park safe and accessible."
For those used to hopping into the back of a pedicab, looking out for a bright yellow permit sticker will be key—they are displayed right on the vehicle's seat post as a beacon of legitimacy.
As enforcement looms, city officials mailed out notices to pedicab companies emphasizing their intent to tow non-permitted vehicles, pointing out the risks involved with uninsured and potentially unsafe transportation; Deputy Director Kathryn Bruning of City of Houston Regulatory Permitting made the city's stance clear in a statement obtained by City of Houston News, “We want everyone to enjoy the many events Houston has to offer without worrying that a short ride from their parking spot might end up costing thousands of dollars in medical bills if they are in an accident involving a non-permitted and uninsured pedicab that flees the state when the event is over.”
