As Hurricane Helene barrels toward the Sunshine State, Palm Beach County schools are taking no chances, with the district announcing closures for tomorrow due to the "forecasted severe weather conditions associated with Hurricane Helene." All school-operated facilities and events, including "extracurricular activities, after-school programs, sports, school meetings, and other on-campus events," are canceled, prioritizing student and staff safety amid rising concerns about the hurricane's potential impact, according to CBS12 News.
With sustained winds threatening to cross thresholds safe for school buses, the School District of Palm Beach County has preemptively grounded its operations, advising staff members to stay home unless directed otherwise by their supervisor. The National Hurricane Center has been tracking Helene's progress closely, projecting a Category 3 intensity by landfall. Meanwhile, local officials seem in agreement, with a state of emergency declared across 61 counties by Gov. Ron DeSantis—though Palm Beach was one of the last to close its school doors, as noted by CBS12 News.
The Okeechobee County School District is also shutting down tomorrow, with WPBF reporting that extended day activities will cease today. The entire region, including the Treasure Coast, has been placed under a Tropical Storm Warning, with area schools adjusting their schedules and activities accordingly. The Martin, St. Lucie, and Indian River County districts will also see closures and cancellations in the wake of this natural threat.
The University of Florida, for example, is closing its doors tomorrow, alongside the University of North Florida which is extending its closure through to Friday. Florida State University has opted for a longer hiatus, wrapping its campus in precautionary silence from this morning until the following Sunday night. Florida A&M University, mirroring the concern for the welfare of its students and staff, is canceling classes midday today continuing through to the end of the week. "All academic operations will be suspended to accommodate any potential disruptions caused by the storm," stated by FAMU officials, as reported by WPBF.
The Academy for Nursing and Health Occupations in Palm Beach County also joins the list of closures, announcing a closure to both classroom and clinical activities tomorrow and Friday.
