Chuckles Comedy House, an esteemed venue in the Memphis comedy scene for over a decade, has permanently closed its doors. The abrupt shutdown was announced Sunday, following the cancellation of all August shows and leaving a community of comedy enthusiasts and performers searching for answers and a new space to gather. Chuckles had made itself a place where well-known figures like Sheryl Underwood, Lavell Crawford, Katt Williams, and Denzel Washington would make appearances, creating a robust connection between celebrities and the city of Memphis, this connecting bond now feeling the strain of absence.
According to WREG, the closure came as the owner of Chuckles decided to "move in a different direction", leaving Marlo Matthews, a promoter who has been with the club since its inception, to reflect on its cultural impact: "It meant a lot for the city and we had a place where we can relax," given the venue's role not only as an entertainment hub but also a place for respite and community building among Memphis residents. In response to the closure, hints of a forthcoming venture that may rise to fill the void left by Chuckles have been implied, with Matthews noting that a lot of powerful people want to get involved with doing something like this.
The loss of Chuckles resounds beyond emotional sentiment; financial strains also played a critical role in its cessation. Mike Ware Sr., the CEO of Chuckles and its creator, conveyed, as per Action News 5, the immense challenges faced including grappling with a $400,000 debt and the fallout from COVID-19, summarizing his plight by revealing, "The expenses that we accumulated during the time of COVID finally caught up with us... I even sold a house to try to keep it afloat".
As patrons and performers reflect on the decade of laughter and growth afforded by the establishment, Chuckles made a plea to its 30,000 supporters with a GoFundMe page. Their hope, as noted on their Facebook page and reported by FOX13 Memphis, is to keep the spirit of the comedy house alive: "Chuckles Comedy House has been your go-to spot for laughs, but we’re in a bit of a jam and could really use your help. Every donation, no matter the size, brings us one step closer to keeping our doors open and the laughs rolling".
