A late-night collision at a Las Vegas intersection has left a bicyclist with critical injuries and resulted in the arrest of an impaired driver. The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department reported that on September 15, a Volkswagen Atlas and a K2 Astral 1.0 mountain bike were involved in an accident at East Tropicana Avenue and Wilbur Street. LVMPD's news release confirmed the event happened around 11:37 p.m., documenting that the vehicle, after moving eastbound on Tropicana Avenue, struck the bicyclist who was crossing against the traffic light.
The bicyclist, identified as 34-year-old Anny Mujica-Moreno of Venezuela, suffered life-threatening injuries and was urgently taken to the Trauma Unit at Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center; there, she remains in critical condition. Juan Dominguez, the 66-year-old driver of the Volkswagen from Boerne, Texas, showed signs of impairment at the scene, which led to arrests relating to DUI charges while the bicyclist traveled southbound on Wilbur Street—against the traffic signal, which supports the evidence and witness testimonies provided to the authorities.
The official statement from the LVMPD described the point of impact, where the front of the Volkswagen collided with the right side of the bike, thereby causing significant injuries to Mujica-Moreno. The LVMPD's Collision Investigation Section is conducting further investigation into the details of the mishap.
The LVMPD urges drivers and bicyclists alike to adhere strictly to traffic laws and exercise caution at all times. The aforementioned driver is currently facing DUI-related charges as a consequence of the actions that led to this unfortunate and severe accident.
