A three-month-old boy has tragically lost his life following a multi-vehicle collision on Sunday afternoon near Power and Baseline roads in Mesa. The incident involved three cars and resulted in one fatality and injuries to four other passengers. According to ABC15, emergency services transported five people from the scene due to their injuries.

The deadly sequence of events began when a westbound car failed to safely to stop, rear-ending a stationary vehicle at a red light. The struck vehicle, containing two adults and two children, was pushed into the intersection and overturned. A third car, an Audi, was also involved in the incident. The three-month-old boy, secured in a child safety seat, was later pronounced dead at the hospital. The other passengers in the second vehicle suffered a range of injuries, from minor to serious, including a broken bone suffered by one of the children.

Mesa police indicated the driver of the first vehicle, a Honda Civic, sustained broken bones while the occupants of the Subaru Forester it collided with experienced varying degrees of injuries. The adult driver and another adult passenger in the Subaru were stated to have minor injuries, as reported by AZFamily. There were no signs of impairment found in the driver responsible for the crash, according to officials.

Investigations are ongoing by the Mesa police to understand the root causes of the crash. Speeding is believed to be a contributing factor to this unfortunate event. Representing the perverse juxtaposition of safety measures and tragic outcomes, the police confirmed that the infant was in a correctly installed child safety seat at the time of the collision. With the crash still under investigation, there may yet be more to learn about the circumstances that led to one young life cut so devastatingly short.
